We took the ferry to Mackinac which is the only way to get there other than your own boat.(marina full can't get in) There are at least 500 year round residents. During the summer season they work 500 horses on the island, and they are moved off the island when winter comes.
It's a bike riders paradise, especially the road around the island, its eight miles and we rode our bike's all the way.
